而在这里硼砂充当的是助熔剂的角色，锻造焊接时金属与氧气接触后会生成氧化物，它们是炉渣的主要成分。而加热熔融下硼砂会分离出氧化硼与金属氧化物发生反应，一来它可以消除已经形成的氧化渣，降低金属损耗。另外它还能阻止新的氧化物形成，保护金属表面。
